Nielsen Telephone Survey and Why Nielsen Conducts It

The Nielsen Telephone Survey asks about your lifestyle behavior, education and media choices – which newspapers you read, what you listen to on the radio, and what programs you watch on TV or other devices. Retailers and media companies in your local area will use this information to better meet the needs of their customers. Your answers will represent thousands of other people who were not invited to take this important survey.

Your answers will be kept confidential and reported only in combination with other survey participants. They will never be reported individually. All of the information that you give us will be kept absolutely private including your name and contact information. Protecting your privacy is one of our largest priorities. Nielsen will never give your name or address to any company that wants to sell you things.

How We Got Your Number

Your telephone number was selected at random by a computer. For instance, in Coral Springs, FL one telephone exchange is 755. A computer would randomly pick telephone numbers between 755-0000 to 755-9999. This way we can reach a cross-section of the people in your area.

Why a Consumer Survey Was Mailed to Your Home

Your answers are crucial to this study. The Consumer Survey and TV Diary give you the opportunity to voice your opinions on your favorite sports teams, activities you like, your shopping, travel and entertainment preferences. The information you provide is valuable since your response will represent thousands of people just like yourself in your local area who were not selected to do the survey. If you do not participate, we cannot substitute someone else for your answers. We lose those answers that represent so many people.

The Nielsen Consumer Survey Television Diary and Why you Received It

As part of the Nielsen Consumer Survey, you may have received a television diary. The Television Diary gives television stations, media companies, and local businesses, an idea of what people like to watch in your local area. The TV Diary is used to record the programs you watched on television for seven consecutive days. It is very important that you complete the Television Diary as well as the Consumer Survey. You received the TV Diary to represent thousands of people in your local area since we cannot ask everyone about their television viewing.

Privacy

Your answers will be kept confidential and reported only in combination with other survey participants. They will never be reported individually. All of the information that you give us will be kept absolutely private including your name and contact information. Protecting your privacy is one of our largest priorities. Nielsen will never give your name or address to any company that wants to sell you things.

Completing the Television Diary

The TV Diary is to be filled out only by the person who completed the Nielsen Consumer Survey. You can use either a pen or pencil to fill out the TV Diary - whatever you feel more comfortable using.

Instructions on how to fill out the TV Diary are located on the inside front cover and first page of the diary. The TV Diary is to be filled out by the person in your household who completed the Consumer Survey and only their TV viewing should be recorded--not the viewing of the entire household.

Please start filling out your diary within 3 to 4 days of receiving it. For seven consecutive days, write each program you watched for five minutes or more in your TV Diary. If you did not watch TV on a particular day, please check the box at the bottom of the page that says "Did not watch TV today."

If you recorded a program and watched it during your diary week, please write it down on page 20. Please enter the day/date, the name of the program, the time when you watched the program, and the channel/station, if you know it. Please be sure to check the boxes that say "Recorded this program all five weekdays" and "Watched this week", whenever they apply.

Recording your TV Activity

Write in the station and program name of all the programs that you watch for five minutes or more in that half hour time slot on your daily grid page. The program you are watching live should be filled in the half hour line on the day/time you are watching. All recorded viewing should be recorded on page 20 of the TV Diary. Don’t worry if you skip a day. If you skip a day, please fill in the diary for that day to the best of your recollection, and then continue filling out your seven days of viewing.

If you have not watched TV on a particular day or do not watch TV at all, please place a check on the bottom of the page in the diary in the box marked "If you DID NOT watch TV today, check here" for each day that you did not watch TV.

Time Allotted for Completing the Television Diary

Keep your diary by the place you usually watch TV and fill it out as you are watching. Please complete and return your TV Diary as soon as you can to ensure that your answers are included in this important study. Your TV Diary is complete after you have finished writing down the TV programs you watched for seven consecutive days. Reporting each day's viewing only takes a few minutes per day. We will be accepting completed diaries for a few weeks.

Mailing the Television Diary

When you have completed the TV Diary, go through the checklist printed on the inside back cover of the Diary. Once you are sure that you have filled out everything, seal and mail it. To seal it, pull off the self-peeling sticker and stick the flap on the back page to the front cover. If you need to, it is okay to tape the flap to the front cover. Make sure that the address on the outside back cover is showing. No envelope or postage is needed.

Replacing Television Diary

If your TV Diary is misplaced or unusable, you can contact us and we will gladly send you another diary. Simply call us at 1-800-753-6043 or email us at surveys@nielsenlocalsurveys.com.
